Guide · Ordering Indian food

What to order at an Indian restaurant

For a first visit, share one mild creamy curry, one sharper curry, a rice, and one to two naan per person, plus a starter if you are hungry. At Mangoes that could be Butter Chicken ($26.56, marked mild), Lamb Rogan Josh ($26.90), a Large Rice ($8.12) and Garlic Naan ($5.22 each).

Build the order in four parts

Starter. Samosas ($18.28, four pieces) or Vegetable Pakora ($18.28, six pieces, marked gluten free) work for sharing. The Mixed Entrée ($24.08) is listed as for two.

Mains. Choose a creamy one and a sharper one so the table has contrast. Most chicken and beef curries are $24.90, and most lamb and prawn curries $26.90.

Rice or biryani. A Large Rice is $8.12. Biryani such as the Peshawari Chicken Biryani ($21.90) can be a meal on its own.

Bread and extras. Naan is $5.22 to $6.38. Raita, yoghurt and mango chutney are $3.48 each.

Easy mistakes

General guidance, not specific to our kitchen.

  • Ordering only creamy curries. Add one with a sharper sauce so each bite is different.
  • Forgetting rice. Curry sauce needs something to go on.
  • Too little bread. Naan is the easiest thing to run out of, so order one or two per person.
  • Skipping the sides. A $3.48 raita cools a hot dish.

Questions

What should I order if I have never had Indian food?
Start with Butter Chicken, which our menu marks as mild and as the most liked dish ($26.56). Add one sharper curry such as Lamb Rogan Josh ($26.90), a large rice and naan.
How many dishes should two people order?
As general guidance, two mains, one rice, two naan and a starter to share is a common balance for two. Order more mains rather than bigger rice. Use our order calculator for a group.
Which dishes are mild?
Our menu marks Butter Chicken as mild and describes the Korma dishes as cooked in a mild curry with a thick creamy almond sauce. We have not given every dish a heat rating, so tell us your preference when you order.
Can I order a set menu instead?
Yes. The Specials section has the Tandoori Banquets ($110.00 for two), the Mango Family Special ($127.60) and the Vegan Banquet ($120.00).
